The work, temporarily installed, uses enhanced maps made by US Steel, engineering drawings, and architectural drawings in combination with birds made from industrial processes. The birds function as paperweights for the adjusted drawings. Over the course of a month at Carrie Furnace, time and the elements marked the papers with rust and oxidation— demonstrating how industry has impacted the land and people of Rankin.

*2019 - “Time Travelers” mural with Edith Abeyta

We combined a children’s board game and historical timeline of the community. Residents and places depicted exist or existed in Hazelwood. To allow maximum participation, I combined mauroflage (adhering a painted fabric to a wall) and direct painting. Words painted on the squares are from residents describing everything about their community. Mural completed summer of 2019, Acrylic, 2,000+ sq ft, Budget 14K. Created in partnership with Edith Abeyta (Arts Excursions Unlimited) and Support from Trying Together and City of Pittsburgh and Hazelwood residents 2019

The students then took what they learned to create a mosaic welcome sign for park-let located at Perrysville Ave and Federal St on Pittsburgh’s Northside.

*2016 – “Corner of Hope” / Negro Baseball League Public Murals.

The Negro Baseball League Murals was a project combining community service with art. The Pittsburgh Project students cleared a heavily overgrown lot, researched the Negro Baseball League. We designed a baseball card that paid homage to the history of the league and contained contemporary flair. Students and adults from Perry Hilltop neighborhood projected and painted the chosen athletes on the cards. The resulting 12, 4’x8’ panels placed to represent a home run fence. Pitcher’s mound has flowers. It has become a source of community pride. Completed summer of 2016, Acrylic on exterior sign board, 12, 4x8’panels with famous Negro League baseball athletes and Pittsburgh teams. Created in partnership with The PittsburghProject, support from Oakglade Reality, Perry Hilltop and Fineview Citizen Councils

Designed in collaboration with The Pittsburgh Project, Art and Soul woman’s group, Perry Hilltop Community members and Jill Joyce, architect. The Lantern is a replica of an 1850’s lantern used by escaping slaves. Stainless steel footprints represent a path towards freedom. Landscaped grassy area also contains bench and native trees. 10’ x 10’ x 22’ steel lantern, 100’x 82.5’ public green space. Inside, looking up. The viewer can see the Big Dipper and Little Dipper constellations have been cut into the steel top of the lantern, allowing the light to shine out and lead the way towards freedom. Solar powered lights shine at night.

*2009 - “LISTEN! The North Side Girls Have Something to Say!”

Collaborated with girls chosen from youth service organizations; The Pittsburgh Project, Manchester Youth Development Center, Project Destiny, and New Hope Neighborhood, along with arts organizations; Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Artists Image Resource (AIR) and the Childrens’ Museum of Pittsburgh to create an interactive map with content developed by the participating girls. The twenty-two sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls, learned how to take photos and videos using journalism and narrative techniques. They wrote an autobiography paired with a photo they took of themselves. The final work contained 5 video monitors installed in a bas relief, silk screened mirrored map. The layers of clear polycarbonate contain portraits of the girls and are layered in a way to represent the topography of the North Side. The five videos play together, sequentially alternating between video, slide shows and place markers. The girls tell what it is like for them to grow up on Pittsburgh’s fractured North Side and their hopes for the future as well as what they learned as a result of this nine-month project. Funded by Voices of Youth: Art in the Public Grant Award, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Grable Foundation, Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Supporting Grant.

Quotes from Gandhi, President Obama –16 x24x9”, Dr Martin Luther King and Zechariah 8:4-5 -22x48x11”. Statements chosen by community vote to serve as markers on journey towards peaceful existence.
